Getting Ready for Spring

Getting Ready for Spring

Spring is here and many of us are ready to head outside and begin setting out our gardens and take care of the usual winter clean up.  Let’s not forget our interiors; it’s always a good feeling to come inside and find our indoor living space as refreshing as our outdoors.

The first thing I recommend is to look at your room and see what looks old, heavy or dated.  Take a photograph, which really brings the space into focus.  If you are looking for a lighter brighter look, start with your windows.  Are your window coverings heavy or dark; take them down have them professionally cleaned and store them for fall; they’ll feel fresh and new again after not seeing them for awhile.

Replace those drapes with some breezy sheers; you will find them in nearly every color of the spectrum, and surely one will suit your space.  If you want or need a little more privacy or sun protection, look for simple natural matchstick blinds; they will go a long way in your quest for a lighter feeling.

If you don’t need window coverings for these warmer months, consider leaving your windows bare.  You will want to make sure that your trim is freshly painted and in good condition.  No trim?  Why not install some, if the trim in the rest of the room is white, paint this trim the same semi-gloss white.  Now you can enjoy beautifully framed views of your garden or the surrounding mountains.

With all that light pouring into your room, take a good look at your upholstered furniture; does it need cleaning or replacing?  Maybe you can use some slip covers; they are readily available at home centers and bath shops.  Slip covers are a great solution if you have a heavy pattern or plaid that is most comforting in the fall or winter, but not so much in the spring and summer.  You will be able to find a solid covering that will compliment the other fabrics in the room, and slip covers are washable.  Add some splashy colored toss pillows for some interest.  You can have some fun with these, go bold and enjoy this carefree feeling during the coming warm months.

If your silver pieces have been out since the holidays, polish them and put them in protective wrap. Bring out the china, crystal, or ceramic pieces that you use for your casual serving.  It is always nice to switch out your pieces and enjoy them; you are more likely to use pieces that are out rather than put away.  Your pitchers are perfect for bouquets of garden flowers and greenery; don’t forget some of the lesser used serving pieces, like gravy boats and cream pitchers; they make interesting vessels for smaller arrangements that may add a fresh look to your powder room.
