Bathroom Updates: The Countertop

Bathroom Update:  TheCountertop

Bathrooms and kitchens are expensive to update particularlybecause of the fixtures or appliances and countertops.  Typically older homes have tile countertopsand if they are several decades old that tile is probably really dated.

If the tile is in good shape, but the grout is distracting, for instance in the 80’s it was pretty common to use a wider grout spacing anda contrasting color which is much out of fashion today.  If that is what you are dealing with, you canconsider painting out the grout to a color that is closer to the tile color, probably a beige color.  This will helpneutralize the tile and it won’t appear quite so busy.  I actually did this in a bathroom severalyears ago, painting out the grout on the countertop and the shower tiles.  While it’s tedious work, it’s a hugeimprovement and you’ll be surprised at how much better the tile looks.  The painted grout is still in great conditionand I’ve not had to touch it up at all.  Thisis a great solution if you don’t want to change you tile which will beconsiderably more expensive.  Check yourhome centers or tile stores for grout paint.

Using existing laminate countertops works only if they arein good shape and you like the color and pattern.  Otherwise you’d do well to change them outfor new laminate tops, as they aren’t terribly expensive; home centers sellthem in several sizes, colors and patterns.

Solid countertops are most desired these days for ease ofcleaning and the elegant look of them. If you are lucky enough to have such countertops you are fortunateindeed.  But if you don’t like the colorof them, it would do best to try to work with the colors rather that fightit.  Granite can be busy so you’ll wantto keep the cabinet base in a simple grained wood or paint out the existingwood.

It is important to be realistic about your renovationproject; for instance if you are trying to do this on a strict budget, bepractical.  For example don’t invest inexpensive countertops if you base cabinets aren’t ‘worthy’.  You are better served to save up for a newcabinet base and then add the more expensive countertop; you’ll be happier inthe long run.
