Message Boards
Where are the message boards of our past? Remember the busy corner in your mom’s kitchen where you knew to look to see what was going on in the family; what time soccer practice was or dance class? Was it just a calendar filled with notes or was it an old cork board dad had nailed up near the phone on the wall with a pencil tied to a string?
There are lots of ways to leave messages these days, but most families still have a message board of some sort still on the fridge or kitchen wall. Old habits die hard for most of us; true that if your house is on the market to sell, your agent will want you to clear away anything personal or that looks like clutter, but still you can have a functional message center. You might want to leave a little romantic message to remind someone of a special occasion or date or to post a photo you just received. But the boards don’t have to be so utilitarian as a dry erase board or the old cork board by the phone.
Unless you have a computer linked to the center of family activities you might like to have a bit of the past with an updated twist when it comes to leaving a message.
Consider a panel of one of your kitchen cabinets, upper or lower, depending on who you might want to entertain, i.e. toddlers. Use some chalkboard paint and paint out a panel so you can leave a quick ‘I’ve gone next door’ message. Or if you are bold enough paint out part of a wall in the kitchen or breakfast area; frame it with some molding to match your cabinets and coat it with chalkboard paint. Add some wide molding for a tray and add some colored chalk and an eraser. You can customize your wall, make it any size or shape you like; make it a menu board and if you are artistic, add some art work. Think of the various holidays where a budding artist can experiment while you are preparing a meal.
You’ll find chalkboard paint at your local home center in the spay paint section. Follow the directions and have a little fun. Do they still have chalk boards in schools today, I wonder?
