Focal Point of the Room

Every room needs a focal point and many rooms dictate that focal point by architecture such as a fireplace, a great picture window with a view or tall ceilings with beautiful moldings. But what if you don’t happen to have any such details in your home? Well, you can create a focal point in any room.
In the bedroom, naturally the bed is the focal point, with a colorful bedspread and attractive headboard. No headboard? Make one. Get creative and use a screen used as a room divider behind the bed. A curtain rod with a textile like a tapestry or a beautiful table cloth from your travels can make a great colorful statement about where you’ve been and show off your adventurous spirit. You can put stationery shutters in either upright or horizontal position behind a bed. This is especially good in a child’s bedroom. Paint the shutters a bright color and coordinate it with the bedding.
If you don’t have a fireplace in your living room and your windows aren’t especially picturesque you can use a great piece of art and create a seating arrangement near the piece. Make sure you have good lighting to show off the artwork. A piano is another large piece of furniture that can be used as a focal point.
Just like in your family room where the TV reins superior in most homes you will have your seating arrangements around your focal point to create a comfortable place to relax. With the new flat screens and plasma TV’s we are no longer forced to have to work around a huge cabinet. There are applications where you can have a piece of artwork slide down in front of the screen when you aren’t watching a program, giving your room more versatility. There are many companies now that will ‘frame’ your screen with a beautiful picture frame to suit your style.
So look around your rooms, where is your focal point?
