You may have heard about carpet tiles and wondered what they are and how they can be used. Carpet tiles are pieces of carpet with a padded and self sticking backing, usually about 24” square.

Carpet tiles now come in a fair variety of styles and are intended for residential use, as opposed to the commercial use of earlier times. You might be thinking of carpet tiles in the produce section of your local grocery store, well carpet tiles have come a long way baby! Longer shag styles as well as flat weave patterns are available.

Carpet tiles are often used in play rooms, dorm rooms and office spaces. The convenience of having a tile is that if a section is damaged or stained it can easily be removed and a new tile put in its place. Think of a traffic wear pattern or where there is a ‘pet accident’ that just won’t come up no matter how much you try to remove it.

Speaking of patterns, that is another wonderful benefit of carpet tiles; many styles and colors allow you to make interesting patterns and designs depending on your décor. You can easily run a border around your room in a contrasting color for added interest. Or a harlequin pattern for a family room or play room, try some fun colors like red and tan or black and tan, blue and green, you get the idea. The tiles can be cut in half and you can add to your design an interesting geometric element. If you layout your room on a simple piece of graph paper and fill in the squares with colored pencils you will get an idea of what your pattern might look like, and it’s a lot easier to change on paper rather than once you’ve purchased your carpet tiles.
